Signature West Virginia
West Virginia became a state on June 20, 1863 - carved from Virginia during the Civil War - and its long, mountainous shape carries an outsized range of coalfields, spa towns, national parks and river valleys packed into 24,038 square miles. The state's identity runs on the Appalachian Mountains, the Allegheny Highlands, the New River Gorge, the Monongahela National Forest and the state motto - Montani Semper Liberi ("Mountaineers Are Always Free").
The Greenbrier at White Sulphur Springs is the state's most-famous hotel - a National Historic Landmark and AAA Four-Diamond resort founded around the sulphur mineral springs in 1778, host to 26 U.S. presidents, home to three championship golf courses (including the Old White TPC), the Casino Club, the Cold War Congressional Bunker (a declassified fallout shelter tour), and an entire town-within-a-resort of shops, restaurants and springs.
Charleston is the state capital in the Kanawha Valley - the West Virginia State Capitol (Cass Gilbert's 293-ft gold dome, taller than the U.S. Capitol), the West Virginia State Museum in the Cultural Center, the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences, Haddad Riverfront Park with the P.A. Denny sternwheeler, the Capitol Market in the historic B&O freight depot, and Yeager Airport (CRW) on top of a coal-truncated mountain.
The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve - designated in December 2020 as America's 63rd national park - runs through Beckley, Hico (with Country Road Cabins on the rim), Summersville and up through the New River Gorge Bridge (the country's third-highest single-span bridge, host to Bridge Day every October). It is one of the world's oldest rivers and one of the country's best whitewater rafting destinations.
The Eastern Panhandle - Berkeley Springs, Martinsburg, Shepherdstown, Charles Town and Kearneysville - sits within a 90-minute drive of DC, with MARC commuter rail at Martinsburg and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park (John Brown's 1859 raid) as the eastern anchor. Berkeley Springs is America's first spa town - George Washington bathed in the still-operating Roman Bathhouse in 1748, and the Berkeley Springs State Park downtown hot mineral baths remain the state's oldest continuously-operating spa.
Wheeling in the Northern Panhandle is West Virginia's first state capital (1863-1870) - the Ohio River city with the historic Wheeling Suspension Bridge (1849, then the world's longest suspension bridge), Wheeling Island Casino, and the marquee Oglebay Resort - a 1,700-acre municipal resort with Wilson Lodge, 36-hole golf, the Good Zoo and the Winter Festival of Lights (one of the country's largest holiday-lights events).
Canaan Valley at Davis - the highest-elevation valley east of the Rockies - anchors the state's ski culture with Canaan Valley Resort and Timberline Mountain, Blackwater Falls State Park (Blackwater Canyon and Lindy Point), and hundreds of miles of Monongahela National Forest trails.
The Hatfield-McCoy Trails at Logan run 1,000+ miles of ATV/UTV/dirt-bike trails through 9 counties of the southern coalfields - the country's largest interconnected off-highway-vehicle trail system.
West Virginia is also a college-football state (Morgantown WVU, Marshall University at Huntington), a coal-country state (the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine tour, Coal Heritage Trail Byway, Tamarack: The Best of West Virginia artisan market), and a Bluegrass and Mountain Music state (Vandalia Gathering, Mountain Stage NPR radio show from Charleston).
When to visit
Hot tub stays read differently in February than they do in July. Here's what to expect across the year — temperatures, signature events, the local vibe, and how rates move.
Tub types, explained
Technically a brand name, but used generically for any jetted tub. In hotel listings, "jacuzzi suite" almost always means a private in-room tub with built-in air or water jets. Heat is usually preset; jets are user-controlled.
Functionally identical to a jacuzzi — water jets circulate heated water for a massage effect. The term is more common at Marriott, Hilton, and Wyndham brands. Most "whirlpool suites" hold two adults comfortably.
Deeper than a standard bathtub, usually 18–22 inches, but with no jets. Common in boutique and luxury hotels — quieter, more spa-like, and better for a long hot soak than the jet-driven hum of a jacuzzi.
In strict use, a standalone heated tub holding 100°F+ water. In hotel marketing, often used interchangeably with jacuzzi or whirlpool. A genuine in-room "hot tub" with full thermostat control is rare outside cabin-style resorts.
Every listing on this page specifies which type you'll find in the room. We list only properties with the tub in your room — not in a shared pool area or the lobby spa.

Why trust us
Every hotel on this page has been personally verified to have a private, in-room hot tub or jacuzzi — not a shared pool tub, not a bathroom soaker, not a spa amenity you have to book. We cross-check three sources for every listing: the hotel's own room photos and descriptions, recent guest reviews on TripAdvisor and Google, and direct confirmation from the hotel where unclear. We don't take payment for placement, and we don't generate listings with AI. If a hotel's tub status changes or a property closes, the page updates the next time we re-verify the city (Dothan was last checked August 2026).
