Bangor International Airport (BGR) is the practical hub—roughly 48 miles away, under 1 hour by car. Hancock County–Bar Harbor Airport (BHB) is only 10 miles away but offers seasonal regional flights only. A car is strongly recommended: Route 3 connects the mainland to Mount Desert Island and Bar Harbor, and exploring Acadia requires one. The Island Explorer free shuttle runs late June through Columbus Day, linking hotels, downtown, and Acadia trailheads—a game-changer for parking stress in summer. Downtown Bar Harbor is walkable for shops and restaurants, though parking is tight at peak season. Driving times: Portland is roughly 3 hours south; Boston is about 5 hours south.
