Portland International Jetport (PWM) is about 25 minutes south and serves the region with direct flights from major hubs. The Amtrak Downeaster stops in downtown Freeport right by the shops on the Boston–Brunswick line—a scenic, car-free option. I-95 (Maine Turnpike) Exits 17 and 20 serve Freeport; downtown is right off U.S. Route 1. Downtown Freeport is very walkable for shopping and dining. A car helps for exploring the state parks and South Freeport. Boston is about 2 hours by car. With the Amtrak Downeaster stopping right downtown and the shops clustered along Main Street, Freeport is one of the easier Maine towns to enjoy without a car; you will mainly want wheels for the state parks, South Freeport’s lobster shacks, and day trips down the coast.
