About The Hotel

Hampton Inn Charleston-Downtown is the downtown Charleston Hampton - a 4-star Hilton at 1 Virginia Street West in downtown Charleston in Kanawha County, positioned just off Kanawha Boulevard East and I-64. Rated 4.0 across a large 970-review base with cleanliness 4.3, location 4.3 and service 4.3 solid, rooms 4.2 and sleep quality 4.2 mid-tier and value 4.0 the honest weakness at $118-$125 nightly rates. Amenities include pool, free hot breakfast, fitness center, free parking (a rare downtown-Charleston free-parking combination), pet-friendly rooms, free airport transportation to Yeager (CRW) and kids-and-family-friendly amenities, plus walkable access to Haddad Riverfront Park (Live on the Levee), the West Virginia State Capitol Complex about 10 minutes walk east, Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences, Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center and downtown Charleston dining. Recent 5-star praise: ‘good stay. Clean room, comfortable bed, free breakfast, convenient location.’ Recent 4-star context: ‘satisfactory. After reading reviews that made me nervous about my stay, I wanted to share our experiences. So convenient right off the exit I64. Staff was friendly. Parking was good. Its a little dated BUT Water was Hot. Room and hall were clean’ - a moderate reset that suggests the property is dated but functionally solid. CANDID recent RENOVATION flag to read first: an August 2026 1-star titled ‘HOTEL ACTIVELY RENOVATING’ reported open renovation rooms on the 4th floor with paint/glue/carpet fumes and a coughing-all-night experience (‘I arrived after 2 hours of driving and a long work day. I was placed on the 4th floor and immediately exiting the elevator with my luggage I observed open rooms, painting and wall work materials. While my room was okay, it was not okay to have paying guests on a floor where most of the rooms were being renovated. I was affected by the fumes from paint, glue and carpeting and coughed all night. When I reported this to the Front desk person, she argued that no work was being done on my floor’). An April 2026 1-star titled ‘Terrible front desk service’ reported rude interactions over parking-fee questions (‘the front desk staff is the absolute worst I have ever encountered’). A December 2025 3-star titled ‘Average stay’ reported bathroom-wall rings where fixtures had previously been attached and first-floor missing baseboards and crumbling paint. Best for downtown-Charleston Legislature-week travelers, State Capitol Complex visitors, Civic Center event travelers, Live-on-the-Levee overflow and multi-night family travelers wanting free parking and free airport transportation - ask about active renovation zones at booking to avoid a fume-affected room and request a non-renovation floor at check-in.

What Guests Are Saying

“I recently accidently booked this hotel instead of a different nearby Hampton that I had intended to book. Even though I didn’t realize until I went to check in, the hotel staff were very understanding and helpful. I was able to cancel and rebook at the correct hotel without problems.” — Matthew H., 5 stars

“On a cross country road trip- and planned to stop in Charleston overnight. There are a number of hotels in downtown- with the Hampton Inn being the most convenient. Reeseat the fromt desk provided exceptionalseevi” — Bhershey, 5 stars

“Clean room, comfortable bed, free breakfast, convenient location” — Vrajesh M., 5 stars

"After enduring a challenging, all-night drive, our arrival at the Hampton Inn was met with an instant and profound sense of relief. The front desk staff immediately prioritized our exhaustion, graciously providing us with a room right away. Stepping into our accommodation, we were impressed by the exceptionally well-lit and immaculately clean environment, complete with amenities that were truly comfortable and restorative. However, the true highlight was the consistently outstanding service. Rebecca, in particular, transcended basic customer service expectations, making us feel genuinely welcomed and cared for by going significantly above and beyond the call of duty. Crucially, this high standard was the rule, not the exception; every other team member we encountered provided the exact same friendly, attentive, and non-transactional treatment. We would enthusiastically recommend this hotel to anyone and I would gladly stay again!"

"Stayed just one night but it was a pleasant experience. Room was clean and comfortable. Staff was very friendly and welcoming. Finding the entrance was a bit tricky with one way streets, expressway, bridges, all converging in the area but we got the hang of it. Nice breakfast. Would stay again."

"The rooms were clean and smelled nice. They were aesthetically lit when we arrived at 10:13pm which was nice to be able to avoid stumbling in the dark. The service was lovely—we have allergies and Rebecca at the front desk was helpful with informing me what I could and could not have for breakfast. We also had some dirty water marks on our car, and when we asked if we could borrow cleaner they gave us a spray AND a nice microfiber cloth to use (they saved the day for my husband and for me since now I don’t have to hear him complain about it all day :)) If you are particular about where you stay because you’ve had some really BAD stays in the past—make this one of your safe stays "
