Galax's attractions center on old-time music, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the surrounding New River Valley. The Old Fiddlers' Convention, held the second week of August since 1935, is the world's oldest and largest gathering of old-time and bluegrass musicians — Felts Park fills with campers, jammers and 100,000+ visitors for the weeklong event. The Rex Theater — a restored 1935 downtown movie palace — hosts the Blue Ridge Backroads live radio broadcast every Friday night with old-time bands on stage. The Blue Ridge Music Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway (25 min south) presents Sunday music sessions May–October and interpretive exhibits on the region's musical heritage. The New River Trail State Park — a 57-mile paved rail-trail along the New River — begins at Galax and rolls northeast to Pulaski. Downtown Galax's Grayson Street offers brick storefronts, small restaurants, craft galleries and antique shops. The Chestnut Creek School of the Arts hosts craft workshops and gallery shows. Grayson Highlands State Park — home of Virginia's highest peaks and famous for wild ponies — is 45 minutes west for a marquee day hike. Mount Airy, NC (Andy Griffith's Mayberry) is 35 minutes south for the TV nostalgia trail. Spring dogwoods, cool summer mountain nights, peak fall foliage and quiet winter shape the year.

Galax sits at I-77 Exit 14 via US-58 in Grayson County, about 90 minutes southwest of Roanoke and 30 minutes south of the I-77/I-81 crossroads at Wytheville. Piedmont Triad International (GSO) in Greensboro, NC is about 2 hours southeast; Charlotte Douglas (~2.5 hours south) is the closest full-service airport with major carriers. A car is essential — this is small-town Blue Ridge country with no local transit, no ride-share coverage and no Amtrak station. Downtown Galax and the Rex Theater are 5 minutes' drive from the Hampton Inn; the New River Trail State Park trailhead is 5 minutes' drive; the Blue Ridge Parkway is 25 minutes south via US-58. Highway access: US-58 runs east-west through downtown; I-77 is 3 minutes north via US-58 for north-south connections to Wytheville and North Carolina; VA-89 heads south from town toward Mount Airy, NC. Once you have arrived, plan to keep a car for day trips around the region; most attractions are an easy drive, and parking at the hotel is straightforward.
