The Roanoke Star on Mill Mountain is the city's marquee icon — the largest freestanding illuminated man-made star in the world, with a hilltop overlook of the Roanoke Valley reachable by the Roanoke Star Trail (a moderate 1.5-mile hike) or a short drive up Mill Mountain Parkway. Mill Mountain Park wraps the overlook with a small zoo and picnic area.
Downtown Roanoke is walkable and anchored by Center in the Square — a shared arts complex housing the Science Museum of Western Virginia, the Roanoke Pinball Museum, the Harrison Museum of African American Culture and a rooftop garden.
