Beyond the hotel room
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park at MM 102.5 is Key Largo's crown jewel — the first undersea state park in the US, protecting a portion of the only living coral barrier reef in the continental US. Glass-bottom boat tours, snorkel trips to Molasses Reef and Christ of the Abyss, scuba dive charters, kayak rentals, mangrove trails, and a small on-site aquarium. Book snorkel/dive trips ahead in peak season.
Christ of the Abyss — a 9-foot bronze statue in 25 feet of water on Key Largo Dry Rocks — is the most famous snorkel/dive site in the Upper Keys, part of the Pennekamp reef system. Every dive shop in Key Largo runs trips there.
Everglades National Park — the Flamingo entrance is a 45-minute drive north via US-1 and SR 9336 through Homestead, with the 38-mile main road running through pine rocklands, sawgrass prairies and coastal mangroves down to Flamingo on Florida Bay. Airboat tours run on the northern edge outside the park (Everglades Alligator Farm and Coopertown are classics).

How to reach Key Largo
Key Largo sits along the Overseas Highway (US-1) between Mile Marker 90 (near Tavernier) and Mile Marker 107 (Jewfish Creek Bridge at the north end), on the northernmost of the Florida Keys. Miami International Airport (MIA) is about 1 hour 15 minutes north; Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood (FLL) is about 90 minutes north; Key West International (EYW) is about 2 hours south. US-1 (Overseas Highway) is the only road down the Keys — mile markers count down from MM 107 in Key Largo to MM 0 in Key West. Card Sound Road (SR 905A) is the alternate northern entrance via Alabama Jack's — scenic but toll-only. Coconut Palm Inn is at MM 92 (198 Harborview Dr, Tavernier — marketed as Key Largo). Azul Del Mar is at MM 104.3 in central Key Largo. Courtyard, Holiday Inn and Marina Del Mar are all clustered around MM 100 in central Key Largo near John Pennekamp. A car is essential — there is no public transit down the Keys. MM 100 area gets traffic-heavy on weekends, holidays and lobster mini-season.

What's the difference between a jacuzzi, whirlpool, and soaking tub?
Jacuzzi
Technically a brand name, but used generically for any jetted tub. In hotel listings, "jacuzzi suite" almost always means a private in-room tub with built-in air or water jets. Heat is usually preset; jets are user-controlled.
Whirlpool
Functionally identical to a jacuzzi — water jets circulate heated water for a massage effect. The term is more common at Marriott, Hilton, and Wyndham brands. Most "whirlpool suites" hold two adults comfortably.
Soaking tub
Deeper than a standard bathtub, usually 18–22 inches, but with no jets. Common in boutique and luxury hotels — quieter, more spa-like, and better for a long hot soak than the jet-driven hum of a jacuzzi.
Hot tub
In strict use, a standalone heated tub holding 100°F+ water. In hotel marketing, often used interchangeably with jacuzzi or whirlpool. A genuine in-room "hot tub" with full thermostat control is rare outside cabin-style resorts.
