Hotel Viking
"3.9-rated 1926 landmark hotel with spa, restaurant, and pool—but dated rooms require honest expectations."
About The Hotel
The Hotel Viking is a 3.9-rated historic grand hotel at the top of Bellevue Avenue—a genuine Newport landmark (1926) with full-service spa, restaurant, and bar. Location is excellent (walkable to downtown and the mansion district), and the full-service infrastructure is real. Here’s the honest part: rooms and upkeep can feel dated for the price (from $511), and guest reviews flag inconsistent service and unexpected add-on fees. The hot tub is not an in-room jacuzzi but a shared pool-area feature; one guest reported it jetless or out of service. If you’re drawn to the landmark status, the spa, and the central location, go in with realistic expectations about the older building and contemporary room finishes. The Viking trades on its historic grandeur, not on updated comfort.
What Guests Are Saying
“Recently was there after their 2026 renovation. Not impressed with the staff. No place to get a bottle of water or a place for evening coffee. Everything looked “sterile”. No appearance to a return to grandeur. It was “modernized”. You have to dodge painters and employees loitering in hallways. If they weren’t ready to provide 100% service, they should have waited. The myriad of add on charges were shocking.” — evy H., 2 stars
“Pool was cold, hot tub broken, no robe or slippers. Expensive hotel seems to cater to weddings and corporate meetings much more than tourists.” — Rich M., 2 stars
“Great location but sections of the hotel are really hot. My room got up to 88 degrees one day… they moved me to a cooler room at 3:00 in the morning. The tv only worked half the time; they did fix it at one point only for it to go out again. May be due to the age of the building? Great staff…building needs work, tho.” — Linda R., 4 stars

What guests are saying about Hotel Viking.
"We have stayed at the Viking many times before so let’s start with the positives. Amazing cannot be beat location, wonderful staff including front desk, cleaning, valet and restaurant. Complimentary water and bicycles and terrific coffee spot inside the hotel. But having seen the hotel many times before I believe it has gone down. Gone are the many towels, bathrobes, slippers and yes even good toilet paper. No chair anymore in estate rooms. We were on 3rd floor and sound from those above us on 4 travels all too well. Faucet was dislodging from the sink, remote on tv didn’t work and sheets had some old stains. Will we come back again? Yes but the price point does not reflect the state of the hotel. You pay for location."
