Cigarette and marijuana smells throughout the hotel, cigarette and joints butts in the window of our non-smoking room, broken deadbolt, unknown substance on the toilet seat’; a 2-star ‘Great staff, poor quality rooms’ wrote ‘Rooms were extremely damp from poor circulation. Moisture built up on the laminate floors and the bed linens felt wet from the moisture in the room. The floors were also dirty’; balanced against a 5-star ‘Awesome!!!’ who wrote ‘The best one nighter at the Best Western hotel, privacy, service and cleanliness ranks top of the line. All the staff and guests were polite and friendly. “Stayed here with my family over Labor Day weekend. It was reasonably priced, much lower than any of the beach hotels; about 45 minutes to Cape Henlopen and 20 minutes to Bombay Hook and 15 minutes to multiple public Delaware Bay beaches so a good location for us as we are nature lovers and will not pay the exorbitant beach rates in the summer. There were no issues with the room at all or the WiFi and the hot breakfast was great and above average. I lived in Dover for two years about 15 years ago so knew it is not the safest town (my car was broken into and there was a shooting on campus where I was going to school) and especially being across from the Air Base I was not expecting it to be a country club, however there was someone panhandling at the front door as I tried to check in asking for food and trying to “ask me a question.” I just said “no.” They were later seen picking up change in the parking lot. I saw one non-guest walk in from the road into the breakfast area and back out across the street and I could hear staff cursing at each other in the background. I found out later there was a shooting in the parking lot here in June of 2023. We didn’t encounter anything like that but it’s not the most wholesome family friendly environment. It’s a shame that people have gotten away with raising hotel/motel rates to the point where an average family with two above-average income earners can only go to the beach in the summer if they stay in a place like this. If they can improve the security issues I would stay here again as the location, rate, and breakfast make it a worthwhile choice.” — fm5050, 2 stars
