Southpark / I-95 Exit 54 (South Avenue)

Things to do in Colonial Heights

Beyond the hotel room

Colonial Heights' attractions concentrate on the Southpark Mall retail spine, the Appomattox River recreation corridor, and the Civil War sites just south. Southpark Mall is the region's main shopping-and-dining anchor with department stores, a food court and a movie theater — walking distance from the hotel. Violet Bank Museum on the north bank of the Appomattox River preserves a Federal-era plantation home; Robert E. Lee used it as his Petersburg headquarters and the Cutalpa oak he sat under still stands on the grounds. Petersburg National Battlefield, 10 minutes south, preserves the 292-day Siege of Petersburg site with the Crater, the Eastern Front driving tour and interpretive centers. Fort Gregg-Adams (the renamed Fort Lee, home of Army Quartermaster and Ordnance schools) is 15 minutes south with the US Army Quartermaster Museum. Pamplin Historical Park is 20 minutes south — a Civil War museum and reconstructed 1860s plantation. Downtown Petersburg is 10 minutes south with the Old Towne historic district, Blandford Church and cemetery. The Appomattox River Trail offers walking and cycling along the river. Kings Dominion is 45 minutes northwest via I-95 for family theme-park weekends. Mild spring, hot humid summer, comfortable colorful fall and cool winter — the mid-Atlantic Piedmont pattern.

There is more within easy reach: Weston Manor riverside historic home; Prince George County parks; Downtown Richmond museums (~25 min north); Chesterfield Berry Farm west. Seasonal highlights include the Battle of the Crater anniversary at Petersburg NB (July 30), Colonial Heights July 4 fireworks, and the Southpark Mall Black Friday weekend.

For couples

Why a Colonial Heights hot tub suite works for romance

Colonial Heights is a Fort Gregg-Adams contractor and I-95 stopover town rather than a couples-retreat destination — the Comfort Suites Southpark is a reliable Choice-brand pool-less hotel with no in-room jacuzzi. Couples wanting a genuine private soak in Virginia should drive 2 hours north to Fairfax's Stafford House B&B (Virginia's state marquee — an adults-only jacuzzi-and-sauna suite property) or 90 minutes northwest to Waynesboro's Iris Inn (4.9/1080 Shenandoah B&B with private-cottage hot tubs). In Colonial Heights itself the couples appeal is a Petersburg Battlefield afternoon and dinner at Southpark rather than an in-room jacuzzi weekend.

Many of the Colonial Heights properties below offer extras on request — champagne service, rose-petal turn-down, or late check-out. Mention your occasion at booking; most front desks try to help.

"The rooms were very clean, the service was excellent and very convenient location right off I95. They also have self-serve breakfast. Overall a great experience."

— Maria Ventola, 4 months ago · 5/5

"Room was clean and comfortable, the breakfast was not well prepared for, for a hotel that was sold out. Juice machine not working so nothing for the kids to drink, when things ran out it wasn't replenished. Very disappointing."

Tub types, explained

What's the difference between a jacuzzi, whirlpool, and soaking tub?

Jacuzzi

Technically a brand name, but used generically for any jetted tub. In hotel listings, "jacuzzi suite" almost always means a private in-room tub with built-in air or water jets. Heat is usually preset; jets are user-controlled.

Whirlpool

Functionally identical to a jacuzzi — water jets circulate heated water for a massage effect. The term is more common at Marriott, Hilton, and Wyndham brands. Most "whirlpool suites" hold two adults comfortably.

Soaking tub

Deeper than a standard bathtub, usually 18–22 inches, but with no jets. Common in boutique and luxury hotels — quieter, more spa-like, and better for a long hot soak than the jet-driven hum of a jacuzzi.

Hot tub

In strict use, a standalone heated tub holding 100°F+ water. In hotel marketing, often used interchangeably with jacuzzi or whirlpool. A genuine in-room "hot tub" with full thermostat control is rare outside cabin-style resorts.

Every listing on this page specifies which type you'll find in the room. We list only properties with the tub in your room — not in a shared pool area or the lobby spa.

Why trust us

Hand-verified. No AI filler.

Every hotel on this page has been personally verified to have a private, in-room hot tub or jacuzzi — not a shared pool tub, not a bathroom soaker, not a spa amenity you have to book. We cross-check three sources for every listing: the hotel's own room photos and descriptions, recent guest reviews on TripAdvisor and Google, and direct confirmation from the hotel where unclear. We don't take payment for placement, and we don't generate listings with AI. If a hotel's tub status changes or a property closes, the page updates the next time we re-verify the city (Dothan was last checked May 2026).
