For travelers deciding between this and spending a little more nearby: we’d recommend spending the extra money for a cleaner, quieter room if your budget allows. 🛏️ Comfort & Sleep: ⭐☆☆☆☆ The AC/heat unit roared to life and never once reconsidered that decision. It sounded like a small steam engine had been sealed behind a plastic panel and given one instruction: never stop chugging. White noise fans wish they had this kind of confidence. As for the bed… There was hair. Long hair on the pillow. Leg hair under the covers. (None of it was mine.) And a bedspread that was stretched over the mattress inside-out, prompting the hopeful thought: “Surely this was cleaned before it was… flipped?” Fingers crossed. Deeply crossed. The smell deserves its own paragraph… and maybe its own hazmat rating. Imagine your college friend’s couch. The one who lived like camping was a personality trait. Everyone was welcome to crash. No one ever cleaned. That smell. Multiply it by every traveler who’s ever passed through Michigan City. Best-case scenario: deeply lived-in furniture. Worst-case scenario: existential questions you don’t want answered. 🧹 Cleanliness: ⭐☆☆☆☆ The floor had not met a vacuum in what felt like several presidential administrations. While it might have worked beautifully as a treehouse interior, it strongly encouraged the use of emergency flip-flops (a travel accessory we now fully endorse). The shower area featured what appeared to be an abandoned DIY repair attempt under the shower head. A sizable hole. Half patched. Then… forgotten. Bold choice. 🚿 Bathroom Amenities: ⭐⭐☆☆☆ Two giant refillable bottles of lotion were provided — which sounds generous until you use it. This lotion burns with the enthusiasm of an acid peel. If applied to sensitive areas, one might as well skip ahead to hot sauce and honesty. 🪞 Room Design & Décor: ⭐⭐☆☆☆ The wall-length mirror behind the bed tells you everything you need to know about the interior design era: surplus 1990s hotel chic. Nostalgic? Possibly. Joke-ready? Absolutely. From the outside, expectations are modest. From the inside, they are… historically preserved. ☕ Breakfast: ⭐⭐☆☆☆ Breakfast was free. That’s important. The remaining yogurts were the familiar peach and raspberry Yoplait — the Alanis Morissette of hotel breakfasts. This is a nationwide phenomenon, so no points lost there. Where ground IS lost: the coffee. Just don’t. We’ve had better coffee from pots that have lived entire lives on Nebraska gas station burners. Eggs and sausage were available for the spiritually brave. Bagels appeared alongside cream cheese that looked like it came from a long-term emergency preparedness program. Waffles, however, were plentiful. If you love making waffles, this is your place. If you are an adult who loves making waffles… we have questions. 🧬 Overall Experience: ⭐⭐☆☆☆ By morning, we weren’t sure if we’d increased our susceptibility to viruses or significantly boosted our immune systems. Time will tell. 🧭 Final Word from ONSA Travel This hotel aims for a 2-star experience but falls short, primarily due to cleanliness and comfort issues. If this is the least expensive option and you need a roof for the night, you’ll survive.
