Hadley's location is its appeal — it sits at the center of the Five College area, minutes from UMass Amherst and the campuses of Amherst, Smith, Mount Holyoke, and Hampshire. Cyclists and walkers come for the Norwottuck Rail Trail, the paved path along an old railbed that crosses the Connecticut River and links Northampton, Hadley, and Amherst. South of town, Mount Holyoke Range State Park and the Notch offer ridge hikes and the historic Summit House view, while the Connecticut River and the Hadley farms define the broad, open landscape — this is some of the most productive farmland in New England, famous for its asparagus. Bradley/Hartford airport is about forty-five minutes south. Route 9 is the local spine, carrying you east into Amherst or west over the river into Northampton, while I-91 runs north toward Deerfield and Greenfield and south toward Holyoke and Springfield.
